“Hello, dear, I’m calling with some unfortunate news.”

“Who is this?” Emma said, pulling her phone away from her ear to see if she recognized the phone number.

“Why, it’s Gladys, of course,” she said. “From the Glen Cove Historical Society.” Emma was about to ask how Gladys had gotten her number, but then she remembered: when she went to the meeting, she’d signed in with all of her information, including her cell number. Anyway, Gladys wasn’t one to let the conversation lag by waiting for Emma to say more. “I’m sorry to tell you this over the phone, but it couldn’t wait. Unfortunately, the injunction did not pass muster. Leo and his company will resume building over at Rolling Hill. I’m so sorry.”

“Oh,” Emma said, wondering to herself why Leo hadn’t delivered this news himself.

Gladys continued on: “Leo’s legal team was very aggressive. Here at the Glen Cove Historical Society, we’ve worked on many such projects, and I’ve never seen something like this move through the courts so quickly.”

“Oh,” Emma repeated, seemingly the only word her mind could formulate.

“If I wasn’t so angry,” Gladys said, her voice a conspiratorial whisper, “I’d be impressed. But you didn’t hear me say that!”

“Right, of course,” Emma said. “Of course.”

“I know how disappointed you must be,” Gladys said. “I wish I had better news for you today.”

“I understand,” Emma said.

They ended their call, and Emma stared dumbly at her phone. Of course this would happen. She should have expected it all along. It was silly to have held out hope.

Right then, a text popped up on her home screen from Leo: How’s next week for the groundbreaking?
